too dependent

Hi Doc

Been considering gong to see a psychologist for depression issues but I don''t like the idea of becoming dependent on them or the idea of regression that I have heard about. Does this always happen or do you have to be pretty messed up or immature for this to happen?

Regression is absolutely not required, in patient or psychologist ! Its a concept, explaining some problems that can arise, mainly with an inexperienced therapist, and more likely in analytic styles of therapy rather than in more business-like methods such as CBT ( Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy ). Similarly, major dependence on a therapist should not be a problem with a skilled and experienced therapist, who should be aware ofthis possibility which can arise in some people in some circumstances, and can avoid it.
No requirement for you or the therapist to be awfully messed up or immature, but an example of why therapy is much more complex and interesting than it may appear, as things may be operating at different levels
