I do not think that it is necessary if tonsilitis only develops once a year. It will however, depend on the severity. If your child experience more than three severe episodes of tonsilitis per year, a tonsillectomy is indicated. In the case of severely enlarged tonsils with complications of sleep apnea and difficulty in swalllowing, it is also indicated.
