Our expert says:
You do indeed take a lot of different supplements. Research has indicated that healthy individuals you are eating a balanced diet do not need to take mutiple vitamin and mineral supplements. In fact large studies showed that taking certain vitamins and minerals in excess can be harmful and even increase the mortality rate. At the moment you are taking vit B complex, Prosana and multivitamins, which is not necessary. Take the time to add up how much of each vitamin and mineral you are ingesting per day and you will see that you are probably taking in excess of 3 times the Recommended Daily Allowance or RDA. Just take one multivitamin and mineral supplement and not every day - 3-4 times a week is regarded as sufficient. If you are taking kelp for its iodine content, then please note that all table salt sold in SA contains added iodine and that it is not necessary to take additional iodine supplements. If you are not drinking any milk or eating any dairy products, then it is necessary to take a calcium supplement and the omega-3 is a good idea, but not the omega-6 (we obtain far too much omega-6 on a western diet and too little omega-3). If you use a complete vitamin and mineral supplement then it will already contain chromium. Keep in mind that chromium is a heavy metal and should not be taken in doses exceeding 200 microgram per day. Studies indicate that chromium polynicotate is safer than chromium picolinate. Overdosing on vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements can be hazardous in the long run and is unnecessary if you eat a normal variety of foods.
