Tetanus from Dog Scratch?

Hi Doc - my 9 year-old Goddaughter has been scratched quite badly on a few occasions by her German Shephard puppy while playing with him (he is now growing into a very BIG puppy!) - can this cause Tetanus and should she have a Tetanus injection when this happens? Under what circumstances should kids and adults have Tetanus injections? Thank-you.

Dear Col
Tetanus vaccine keep for 10 years, so if she had her 5 years DT ( Diphteria/Tetanus) vaccination she should be covered. If she gets a deep and/or contaminated wound 5 years after her last vaccination it is safer to give a booster.
