Swollen, sensitive nipples

Hi, for the past 3 days I have suffered from the afore-mentioned symptoms. I am not near my periods and do not generally suffer from any sensitivity in my breasts even when I have my periods. My next period is only due in 2 weeks time. I took a test on Sunday to ensure that I am not pregnant. Sometimes, the tip of the nipple is sore sore i can hardly touch it, it is very hard, raised and red.

Please could you let me know what could be the cause.
