Swine flu, avian flu

Is there any way to protect myself from these bugs - I may have to travel in the US and to the UK?

Unfortunately there is no vaccine against either one of the A(H1N1) or H1N4 virusses you mention.
To prevent spread cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing.
Regular handwashing is very important to ensure you don't get infected after having been in contact with a sick person. This goes for the regular flu as well!
