Medication prescribed to help treat drug addiction is specific to the drug and to the patient. As it happens, naltrexone was studied with regard to its possible use in tobacco addiction, and it was not shown to be effective.

There are several medications that doctors may prescribe to help a patient quit smoking. Examples include the anti-depressant Zyban, and varenicline. All these medications have side-effects and are contra-indicated in some patients.
