Stop breathing while sleeping

Dear Doc,

My boyfriend stops breathing very often after he turned around in his sleep for about 15-20 seconds at a time.

He is 29 and his health is in excellent condition. He also does not snore.

Do you have any idea why does this happens?

Regards,
Katie

Hallo Katie
He may have sleep apnoea. This is very bad for his health as it can cause hypertension and heart disease in the long term. The snorers are usually middle aged overweight men and women. He should please see an ENT specialist as he may need to have a sleep laboratory evaluation or polysomnogram (they sleep over one night in a special facility where they are connected to machines to measure breathing etc) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea
