Our expert says:
Snoring is caused by a narrowing of your airway, either from sleeping in a position that causes pressure on the airway or lax soft palate or being overweight. The narrowed airway impairs smooth breathing and causes the sound of snoring.
You can try the following:
Lose weight if you are overweight - this reduces the volume of tissue in the neck
Sleep on your side – try stitching a sock with a tennis ball in the middle of the back of your pajamatop - this will cause you to turn to your side when sleeping!
Try elevating the head of your bed four inches with a brick under the bed's legs, which may make breathing easier and encourage your tongue and jaw to move forward.
Try a specially designed pillow (you'll find at GAME and MAKRO) .
Avoid alcohol and tranquilizers before bed - this increases the flabbiness of your neck and throat muscles
Clear your nasal passages - Nasal decongestants or nasal strips may help you breathe more easily while sleeping.
If your own efforts to stop snoring do not help, consult your physician or an ENT(ear, nose, and throat doctor).
