SMA

My friend has SMA (spinal muscular atrophy). Is there any hope of future genetic break troughs which may help her or reverse this genetic disease?

SMA involves the destruction of the nerve cells in the spinal cord leading to muscle weakness. Stem cell therapy would be aimed at replacing the damaged nerve cells. Although much work has been done on successfully generating nerve cells from stem cells, this has not been translated into clinical practice.
