I wonder if you may be confusing "associated with" with "causing". Some things, ( including, sadly, childhood abuse of various kinds ) are common. As a result of this, they will quite commonly occur along with other relatively common things ( like various psychiatric disorders ) --- even if there isn't the slightest actual causal link between them. There might appear to be an association bertween childhood abuse and owning a car, but the one doesn't cause the other.
The purpose of some types of research, really hard to do well, is to discover whether such "associations" are causal and strong enough to be actually significant, rather than simply coincidences
