We' ve been burgled twice since our old dog died 6 mths ago. My husband likes Ridgebacks + knows a breeder who should have puppies in about 3 mths. We have 3 children aged 8,5 + 18mths. Would a Ridgeback make a good family guard dog? How are they with children?

My friend has 2 Ridgebacks - inside dogs and they are wonderful, very protective but also laid back.
The trick is that they have to be part of the family and need mental and physical stimulation.

They are fantastic dogs , and are good with children .. but as Chill says must be trained .

I would also make sure they are inside dogs , all watchdogs become better watchdogs when raised inside .

If a ridgeback is selected from a reputable breeder, comes from temperamentally sound stock, and is raised with children, you shouldn' t have a problem.

Be warned though - they' re wonderful dogs, but stubborn as all hell, so they should ideally have experienced and firm owners who are willing to put some effort into their training.
