Dear Kachi

No, you should definitely not be purging during pregnancy. Many women experience "morning sickness", which can occur at any time of the day, and may result in feeling nauseous to quite severe vomiting that needs medical attention and rehydration, but voluntary purging is certainly not recommended during this time.

It is completely normal to experience disruptions in your normal bowel movements during pregnancy, as your changing hormones can effect your gastrointestinal system quite noticeably. Many women experience constipation, while others notice an increase in frequency of stools, or even diarrhoea. This is absolutely fine, and you should continue to eat as healthily as you can, and ensure you are drinking lots of fluids, especially water to replace that which you are losing in the stools. You may find that your bowel movements settle down after the first few months of pregnancy have passed. If, however, the diarrhoea is from food poisoning or it is bad enough to cause dehydration, you must please see your doctor or the midwife who is monitoring your pregnancy. You will need a check-up to identify what is causing the severe diarrhoea, and if that needs to be treated, and to ensure that the dehydration is not causing harm to your baby.
