problem behaviour

we have 5 dogs 3 german shep.a jack russel and a german shep pup about 11weeks my problem is with the female german (4years) and the jack russel if there is a bike or another dog in our street our jack russel is barking etc the female german would bite him and hurt him very bad we consulted the vet about extracting the 4 sharp teeth but obvoiusly its not a sulotion i am scared to leave the pup with her as she would growl and run away from the pup but the pup is hyperactive if we take her to the other dogs and that surely irritates the female biter

the other german shep males and the eldest 14years old we live were there is no dog trainers nearby and we must rely on ourselves to solve this problem

we cant put her down as that seems so unfair if anybody can help please!!

Hi Nici

You are going to have to break the cycle between the JRT and your GSD female. You may to have to keep the JRT visually away from bikes and other stray dogs or even get an anti barking collar to reduce the frequency of barking. Alternatively you may have to medicate the GSD female with behavioural modifying drugs such as Clomicalm or even Prozac - short term solution and or keep her separate from the JRT.

Why don't you phone a qualified behaviourists and have a telephonic consultation (still pay a consultation) and they may discuss possible treatment solutions.

Sounds to me you have too many dogs. Some dogs just don''t get along with others, and specially aggression between females is nearly impossible to resolve.

You may find you have to rehome the ''biter'' - if you do, please make sure she goes to a home without other female dogs.

I''ve never heard of extracting teeth to resolve aggression, and as you have wisely pointed out, that is not going to help anyway. Putting her to sleep is indeed unfair, specially since she did not ask to have to share her life and her home with so many competitors!
