Dear Henry,

Premature ejaculation is the most common male sexual problem. It is basically defined as a problem a man experiences where the time it takes hime from arousal to ejaculation is to brief for his and his partner's satisfaction. Most commonly men experience ejaculating just as penetration is about to occur (or before)or very soon after penetration, so soon that neither the man or the partner have enjoyed the penetrative sexual experience sufficiently for their needs.

Please note that not time frames are given. The emphasis is placed on the experience to brief in duration for the needs of the man and his partner.

It is most often a learned behaviour. As boys we discover masturbation clandestinely and experiment in private. The most embarrassing situation would be to have a parent or family member discover what you are doing. Boys get into the habit then of masturbating to orgasm in the shortest space of time to avoid the possibility of being discovered. We then condition the penis to go through the phases of the sexual response cycle quickly. Not to talk about wanking competitions boys have to see who can come the quickest and shoot the furtherest which do not help the problem.

Long periods of abstinence from sexual activity and anxiety related conditions can also contribute to premature ejaculation experiences in men.

It is also not uncommon for men to develop premature ejaculation secondary to erectile dysfunction. Often the anxiety of performance anxiety due to fear of not getting or keeping an erection can result in premature ejaculation.

The above-mentioned desrcibes the most common and understood factors in the occurrence of premature ejaculation.
