pills for protection agains ticks and fleas?

Dear Doc

We found a street dog, and it is infested with tics and fleas, its a big dog, and there is no way that we would be able to get her to sit still for a dip, is there perhaps medication we can give her orally? and is it very costly?
Thanking you!

Hi Desire

The best option in my opinion would be to use a flea tick spray (e.g. frontline) or a spot-on (e.g.frontline, advantix, Pro-Meris e.t.c.). There is also an excellent tick collar - Preventic - but note this is of no value against fleas. These products are very effective and can be purchased through your local veterinary practice or vet shop.

For a ''quick fix'', which works very very quickly but only lasts for half a day, give the dog a Capstar tablet (vet, or Dischem). It''ll kill all fleas on the dog during the active period - thereafter, the other remedies need to be applied.
