PERIMENOPAUSAL

Please can you explain to me what perimenopausal is? I''ve been trying to fall pregnant for the past 3 years and have recently gone for a blood test to determine if I was pregnant as my period was 5 weeks late. It turns out that I''m not pregnant, and I may actually be perimenopausal. I am currently only 39 years old. Please can you try and explain to me what this all means?????
