panic attacks

what is the best way to treat panicattacks without going on strong medication. i take 1mg ativan only when i get an attack that is usually not more than once a week can i get addicted. the last time i had an attack 1 ativan did not work i had to take another half can you explain why that happened it has never happened before.

If one uses Ativan regularly, daily, for a month or two, addiction / dependency is possible. But if you are using them ONLY when an attack starts, and only artound once a week, this is very unlikely to be a problem for you. The amount that works for you may vary slightly, just as the severity of individual attacks may vary --- and also, perhaps, the timing of the dose may be relevant. Some drugs also used for depression can also help to reduce the frequency and severity of panic attacks, as can CBT counselling. If you see a good shrink, he/she ought to be able to discuss these options in your particular situation
