PAINFULL KNEE

I' ve had pain in my left knee since October/November last year - it is extremely painful when climbing stairs or walking down stairs - could this be cartlidge or something?

It may be. Unfortunately, I can't diagnose that over the internet, and while I hate to pass the buck, the only option for you is to see a physio or a doctor and have it properly diagnosed. Otherwise you're just guessing. So that's important, particularly if you want to exercise and the knee is going to prevent it.
