Painful intercourse

Hi, I am 49 and all of a sudden having been finding intercourse very painful. I have not really started the symptoms of menopause (apart from the odd night flush now and then). I feel as if there is a sore or sore tender area right at the top of my vagina - using lubricant does not help. Have had this about a month now with no improvement. What could be causing this?

It is most likely menopausal atrophy, but see your gynaecologist to check.
