Pain in ankle/leg when walking

I walk briskly for 30 minutes each day, and every so often I get an excruciating, burning pain in my ankle which spreads up my leg (mostly my left leg, but often both). Stopping and stretching makes no difference, nor the type of shoe I wear. I have to get this treated as I am going on a hiking trip soon. Will a GP be able to help or do I need to see a specialist?
