Our expert says:
Firstly, not all persons who choose a sexual lifestyle that includes no strings attached sexual encounters feel the way you have described.
In my experience if this is the outcome of a one night stand, it is often when a person is acting on other emotional needs that are often unmet and repressed and act out by engaging in a sexual encounter, which also may be in conflict with their own personal values, that they end up feeling this way. The true underlying unmet emotions are still left unmet, since the sexual encounter cannot address it and then on top of that the person experiences guilt, shame and regret for acting in a way that conflicts with their personal beliefs. It is possible that the person gets caught up in a compulsive process, should they continue to neglect the true underlying issues, to act out sexually, feel bad, feel depressed and then feel a compulsion to act out again to try and feel better etc.
Alcohol also reduces inhibitions and it is easier to act out when our facilities are numbed or distorted.
