Olives are an excellent food because they are rich in monounsaturated fats which protect the heart - they are one of the reasons why the Mediterranean Diet is regarded as being so healthy. Although they have a relatively high fat content (10.6 g of fat per 100g, of which 8 g is monounsaturated fat), olives do not have an excessive energy content if eaten in moderation. They contain 480 kJ per 100g, so a 30 g portion would thus provide 144 kJ which represents 1.7% of the energy intake of an adult woman who is not slimming and 2.3% if the woman is trying to lose weight.
