Old broken Jaw problems

Hi, My husband was attacked about ten years ago, and had his lower jaw broken in three places, they operated on him and put in plates to rejoin the jaw, they were suppossed to be removed but he never went to have them removed, now it looks like his jaw may be splitting in two again right in the middel, one of the places that it was orginally joined, is it possible that the plates are causing the jaw from pulling apart he is pain and can not eat.
