Neurotic Dog

Our previously calm dog has become totally neurotic responding to all noises particularly trucks, building site noise, DIY noise from neighbours. There are 5 building sites on our road and a shopping centre construction site 1 km away. Not likely to end before end 2011. She runs around house all day panting and trying to eat her way inside through security bars &  doors. If we are outside when this happens she tries to climb into our laps - she is a Great Dane so not practical. What can we do without having to drug her for the rest of her life? Thanks!

Dear Bronwyn

A combination of drugs, DAP diffuser, a'sounds scary' CD and behaviour therapy is what you should do.

Your dog is terrified and her life is miserable. A tranquilliser would be infinitely preferable, in my opinion. If you''re reluctant, try giving her about 20 drops of tincture of valerian twice a day - use a syringe to squirt it down her throat (add a small amount of water, in need). I''ve had very good results with this and it''s cheap, and not addictive.

It sounds like a very highly strung dog .You must realize that all dogs hate loud noises so thats probably why he/she tries to get inside. You have a real problem, hopefully the noises will eventually cease.
