Nail discolouration

The nails of my toes are dark, one of it is a bit sore. What could the cause of this be and can the nail be treated or lightened?

Dear Anonymous

There are many possible reasons for nail discoloration and it is important that you consult a podiatrist or dermatologist to find out for sure. The most likely explanation is a fungal infection but it is important to check because some nail discolourations can be dangerous.
