The discussion around MS is very involved and requires more time and space than this forum will allow, however the are many very good references to MS on the internet, which will provide all the background information that you would need.
The 'lesions' (plaques) that occur in the brain can be multiple and appear in different areas. Depending on the area the patients symptoms may vary. Usually an 'attack' causes increased inflammation around the plaques and this is what causes the symptoms. Once the inflammation subsides (usually with cortisone treatment) the symptoms improve.
Hopefully this will be the case with your freind and she will regain full vision again.
