Mom Eye Disease

My mom was diagnosed with Macular degeneration in September 2010. The eye specialist has done 3 injections into her eyes. She has to go for a 4th one this month but there is no difference. Please explain in plain English to me - Why did they give the injections? What is the meaning of the injections? What is it that they inject? The info on the internet is too difficult to understand. I''m Afrikaans.
