Miscarriage- blighted ovum

I recently had a miscarriage and the doctor said the results show that it was a blighted ovum. This means that the cells don''t become an embryo and are abnormal, but at 8 weeks when I went to the doctor, there was a heart beat. Please can you explain this to me, so I can understand it better. Thanks

If there was a heartbeat then it is not a blighted ovum but a missed abortion. These are technical terms but the outcome is the same.
