Dear Dietdoc,

Is it true that if you exercise a lot your base metabolic rate increases and that you therefore burn more energy even when you' re resting? I can' t understand how this works?

Dear Started Exercising
The amount of energy we require on a daily basis is mainly for 3 things: a) To maintain the so-called Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR) which provides energy for all the bodily functions (breathing, digestion, heart function, etc) which continue 24 hours a day even when we are resting or asleep. Generally up to 70% of your daily energy requirement is used for the BMR (e.g. an adult man may require 10500 kJ per day, of which 7350 kJ are used for the BMR , b) A smaller portion of the energy is used for exercise and movement. c) Another small portion is used to maintain your body temperature. When you exercise the BMR is stimulated and this can use up more energy than the amount of energy you used for doing the actual exercise because BMR energy utilisation goes on for 24 h a day.
