Dear Anthea
My opinion of meal replacement shakes (presumably for the purpose of losing weight?) is that if you find that these shakes can assist you with sticking to a reduced energy intake and you do not use them for too long, then they do serve a purpose. You must however, check if the shake you intend using does not provide more than about 2100 kJ per meal otherwise it won't promote weightloss. Also make sure that the product does not contain excessive quantities of vitamins and minerals. Some of these product contain 100% to 300% or even more of the RDA for certain vitamins and minerals per serving, so if you should use more than one serving a day, then you would be totally overdosing with vitamins and minerals which can be harmful to your health. Luckily most people get tired of using meal supplements for slimming purposes after awhile.
