Normality is a big question as sexual terms of reference will always be varied . Why masturbation is prefered will always create tension in the partner when sex is AVAILABLE.Discussions with your partner should focus on the possible reasons for the preference and if there is any tendency to sexual gratification by masturbation and if there is any insecurity with vaginal intercourse.A therapist can assist.

There is nothing wrong with masturbation provided it does not influence your partner in any way.
If one prefers it to the real deal then there must be an underlying reason ie not turned on by you etc
The one problem with masturbation is that your body gets used to your touch as you know better than anyone else how you like it.When someone tries the same your body " might"  not respond the same.
