Lump in breast

My mother has had a lump in her breast for quite some time now and she is now complaining that it started paining
Why could this be?
Should she have it removed?

Your mother will have to consult a general surgeon for a histological diagnosis of the lump. After a histological diagnosis has been made, the surgeon will decide if it is necessary to the remove the lump. The pain is most likely due to pressure of the lump on the surrounding tissue.
