Low calorie diet

Hi Doc
I have recently started a 1200 caloried diet a day, for now everythin is fine and i have lost some weight, but what i want to know is, if i eat the all the good carbs, protein, fat, etc...in moderation basically counting calories will i gain weight? coz sometimes for an example i eat
1 x medium boiled potato(about 100 cals) (not pealed, no salt or oil)
1 x chicken drumstick boiled(skinned)(184 cals)
1 x cup tea with sugar (20 1tsp sugar, 2cals for tea)
and i eat fruits between meals or drink tea without sugar

for breakfast if i dont have cereals i eat
2 x slices of brown bread (about 100 each)
2 x half tsp butter (55cals for each tsp)
1 x tea with sugar (22 cals)
1 x large apple (100 cals)
total 432 cals

please advice if this is ok?

thanks
Lucy

Dear Lucy
If you reduce your energy intake down to 1200 kcal per day then you should lose weight. The reason why slimming diets specify the avoidance of certain foods such as fat, sugar and highly refined carbs like cakes, pies, etc, is that these foods are very high in energy and make it difficult to reduce your daily energy intake. Eating a varied diet with a lower energy content will assist weightloss. I must point out once you are used to the portion sizes you need for your diet, that is not necessary to count very single kcal you ingest - this could become obsessive.
Also keep in mind that by doing some form of regular exercise like going for a brisk walk for 30 min a day, you will also be reducing the amount of energy available to your body for fat formation.
