As is also generally the case, the best way of losing weight before conception, is to use a sensible balanced diet with a reduced energy content and daily aerobic exercise for 30 or more minutes. Avoid all fad or starvation diets and all slimming pills and potions including over-the-counter products and herbal preparations because all such products can cause negative side-effects and potentially be dangerous if you should conceive while taking them. Reduce your energy intake by eating an energy-reduced, low-fat, high-fibre diet (click on 'DietnFood' at the top of this page, then on 'Healthy Diets' and then on 'Slimming Diet' for a copy of such a diet), and increase your energy output by doing regular exercise (running, jogging, skipping, cycling, swimming, join a gym or Walk for Life). While you are on the 'Diet'nFood' site click on 'Eating throughout life' and read the articles on 'Pregnancy'. Make sure that you calcium, iron, omega-3 and folic acid intakes are adequate during conception and pregnancy. For example you may need to take salmon oil capsules to ensure that your omega-3 intake is adequate if you do not eat fatty fish regularly. Taking folic acid supplements (ask your chemist) before conception can reduce the incidence of spina bifida. Use 3 servings of milk or dairy products (yoghurt, cottage cheese) a day to provide the 1200 mg of calcium you need as an adult woman and eat foods rich in iron such as red meat, organ meats, eggs, fish, iron-fortified bread and cereals, or dried fruit to provide enough iron for good health.
