Knee

hi doc,
My mother complains about her knee being painful, its so painful that it gets swollen and she must be on painkillers. now she says when she walks its as if the knee has no balance or has shifted or cracked and as result she must be careful when putting her foot down..........what could be the problem?

She may have a disc or ligament problem in the knee especially if it feels "unstable" to her. She should please see her doctor as further tests (MR Scan or x/rays or arthroscopy) may be needed to identify the specific problem. Painkillers are only symptomatic treatment and won't solve the problem.
