Iron levels

My husband has just been for a medical check-up and the doctor said that his iron level was double the normal of what it should be,the initial blood test showed him at the top of the range and then after further tests he said that my husband was double and that he should cut down on red meat and come back in three months??? Is red meat the only thing that can cause this, his annual check-up last year did not show this high iron level??? Would appreciate your comment, Thanks

Hallo Bubbles
He may have a genetic disease called haemochromatosis (see http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/hemochromatosis/) Symptoms develop typically after 30 years of age, and will show up earlier in men than in women (as women lose blood by menstruation which keeps the iron levels lower)
If it is confirmed, it is treated by regularly donating blood to get rid of excess iron in the blood.

Regular blood donations will sort this problem out very fast.
