Our expert says:
Severe iron deficiency can make patients very depressed because they are constantly exhausted and too tired to drag themselves out of bed. If you do suffer from severe iron deficiency, I hope your doctor is giving you intravenous iron treatment so that you start feeling a bit better fast. You will also have to take iron-folic acid supplements like FerroFolic for 3 months or longer because it takes a long time to replenish depleted body iron stores. In addition the following foods are rich sources of easily absorbable iron: red meat, liver, fish, egg yolk, poultry, iron-fortified breakfast cereals, all wheat bread and flour and maize meal sold in SA, and dried fruit. Have a glass of orange or grapefruit juice with your iron-fortified breakfast cereals or mieliepap in the morning because the vitamin C in the juice will help improve your iron absorption.
If your iron-deficiency is completely cured and you still feel depressed, then you may need to discuss this with your dr and ask to be referred to a clinical psychologist who will assess you to determine if you suffer from endogenous depression or not. But first cure the iron-deficiency because you will feel 100% better and more energetic.
