Hot Spots

I have two Labrador dogs, in the last 3 months both of them had hot spots, I spoke to the vet he said that it is a germ. How do I prevent my dogs from getting any HOT SPOTS in future.

My mom''s lab also got hotspots until they changed his food. He went from Ultra Dog to Montego and his coat was healthier and shinier without the hotspots.
