Our expert says:
With the latest ELISA testing methods, HIV antibodies can be detected within four weeks after infection. The majority of people (97%) will however, test positive after a three month period. A six month window period is extremely rare.
The use of antiretroviral medication during the window period can delay the formation of antibodies and therefore, extend the window period to 12 months.
