HIV Question

Hi dr, how accurate are HIV test? Is it possible to have a HIV false negative result past the window period? For example if you had been infected for like 5 years or something, could the test give a false negative result? If so, what would be the circumstances for that?

Thanks dr, I appreciate your help

HIV PCR blood tests are very accurate. If is not likely that you will get a false negative after being infected for a period of 5 years. It is also important to keep in mind that the viral load, as well as CD4 count must be done, as part of the HIV test.
