Dear Portia
I am sorry to hear that your dear Mom has raised bp. Please click on 'Diet' at the top of this page and then on 'Food as medicine' and 'Hypertension' and read about the DASH Diet which was developed in the USA to lower blood pressure. This diet is low in fat and sodium /salt which will lower bp. Ask the dr who is treating your Mom's hypertension if she is allowed to exercise (for example going for brisk walks in the fresh air) and if he/she gives permission for her to do exercise. If she is given the go-ahead, then she should try and go for a walk every day increasing how far and fast she walks as she gets fitter. If your Mom finds that she cannot apply the DASH diet without additional guidance then do consult a clinical dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area), who will assist her with the diet.
