Hallo Andrea
Not all patients with hiatus hernia needs an operation. He should see a gastro enterologist for a gastroscopy. According to the results, they will decide if he needs an operation or if he can be treated with long term medicine.

To this I would like to add that some hernias recur even after surgery and that it is not a failproof operation.
