hernia surgery

Hi Doc

Please tell me more about hernia surgery. My husband needs to go for the surgery. How long is the recovery time? We don''t have medical aid. Will be ok if he went to a state hospital? Please tell about the surgery itself. Is it a dangerous operation?

Many Thanks
Renette

Hallo Renette
It depends on what technique they plan to use. Recovery time is 10 days to 2 weeks. Surgery is usually reserved for patients that do not get relief with useage of medication or if the acid is damaging the lower part of the esophagus, increasing the risk for esophagus cancer (Barret's esophagitis) You can read more about the surgery at http://healthguide.howstuffworks.com/hiatal-hernia-repair-dictionary.htm
On how safe it will be in a state hospital - it depends on the hospital and surgeon you use. Most academic hospitals have very experienced surgeons but the nursing care in some state hospitals may be substandard due to high workloads.
