Heart problems

Please help me!

My husband had a heart attack in 2002. They put in a stent. Last year again problems. He had a bypass for four arteries. He is 57 years old, 1,93m tall, weighs 87kg, not smoking, drinking a whiskey now and then and is active. His brother died at 38 from a heart attack, his father at 70, also a heart attack. He is currently on prexum, adco-simvastatin 20mg and ecotrin. His cholesterol is very low, less than 4. Last week he was not well again, and we went again to the cardiologist. He said the small arteries in the heart is closing up, like the big ones did. He said they could do nothing more. No bypass on the small arteries, it is factor x. They gave him Imdur 60mg. It gave him big head aches. Is there really nothing more to do???? Is ther no other medicine he could use??? What is the life expectancy?? Please help

Dear Lisa
The health of your arteries depends very much on hereditary factors as well as diet, exercise and lifestyle choices. Imdur is a nitrate vasodilator. It works by widening the blood vessels in the body. This reduces the workload of the heart and helps to relieve chest pain. Patients may get severe headaches when starting this medication but some do develop a tolerance for this. Discuss with his cardiologist, there are other medications that may also help but it depends on his current medical condition and ECG results whether other medications will help. It is impossible to predict life expectancy, it depends on the severity and extent of ischemia, the presence or absence of complex cardiac arrhythmia, the site of vascular obstruction, the number of coronary vessels involved, how well the heart is functioning, and the extent that risk factors can be modified.
