Health psychologist?

Dear Cybershrink

A friend of mine has an obsession about things such as radiation from satellite dishes etc. affecting her health. She moved into a complex where satellite dishes were pointing her way and actually asked the neighbours to move their dish to another place. She always worries about these kinds of things and it is really starting to affect her life in many other ways as it has become an obsession.

I cannot remember the other things now but it all has to do with this sort of thing affecting her health in some way, but it is totally bizarre behaviour to all other people. What is this called, and should she be seeing someone like a health psychologist about this? It even makes her get anxiety attacks in the form of chest pressure etc.

Thanks doc.

She sounds either very seriously misinformed, or possibly paranoid, or both. Amongst all the very real risks and dangers of modern life, Satellite dishes are totally harmless. And such a degree of inappropriate worry can in itself be far more damaging to her health and well-being than 1000 satellite dishes. There could be a basic anxiety disorder, with hypchondriasis, or other possibilities.
It would indeed be best for her to see a good local psychologist for a proper assessment and a discussion of treatment options. Maybe at first, she would be best able to accept seeing such a shrink on the basis of getting an assessment of the extent to which these concerns of hers may be negatively affecting her.
