Our expert says:
Fruit juice can be used to replace 1 portion of fruit a day, but generally speaking it is better and healthier to eat whole fresh fruit, or to squeeze your own fresh fruit juice. The reason for this is as follows: most of the commercial fruit juices that are sold in SA consist mainly of so-called clarified apple or grape juice, which is low in dietary fibre, but very rich in fructose (fruit sugar). Recent research indicates that high intakes of fructose in liquid products like fruit juice may promote weight gain. When you eat fresh fruit or make your own fresh fruit juices like orange juice or a blend of crushed fruit in a liquidiser, the higher dietary fibre content will ensure that you do not have ingest such high levels of fructose.
So having a small glass of commercial fruit cocktail juice once a day is fine, but don't drink 5 large glasses a day to replace your fruit intake.
