Hi Monica, thank you for the question.
This is a controversial subject overseas (especially in the USA and Brazil) as fat grafting/injections for facial volumising has its advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is that if fat ‘’takes’’ then one can expect results lasting between 3 to 5 years. It is not permanent in the sense of the results due to the simple fact that as we age the fat (irrespective if it is naturally in the face or if it was grafted through injection) will change with our ageing process (thins and drops). Further controversy exists in the exact place that one should harvest the fat from and there are even some surgeons who claim that touch up procedures every 6 months for the first year are necessary. Further investigations are taking place (with very promising results) in increasing the viability of fat by enriching the harvest with one’s own stem cells derived from a second area of harvested fat (should not be confused with PRP enriched fat).
It is a safe procedure with an experienced surgeon however you should run through all of the possible side effects and complications (to name a few: invasive procedure, swelling, bruising, overcompensation by 40 to 60%, one side may take and the other does not, infection leading to septicaemia, abscess formation, necrosis of tissue, scarring and granulation of deposited fact) and one typically requires only conscious sedation as opposed to true general anaesthesia.
