Facet blocks are done to the neck or lower back and are done by radiologists as well as spinal surgeons. It numbs the sensory nerves which supply the pain fibres to the facet joints at the back of the vertebrae of the spine. It can have pain relieving effects and also serve to confirm that the pain is actually coming from the facet joints. The surgeons sometimes add a nerve ablation procedure to those nerves where the nerves are treated to not transmit the pain more permanently.
