Energy gels

Hi Doc

I run for 3 hours on Sundays and 1.5hrs 3x during the week and have a problem with all the energy gels from GU, diluted coke to Corn Syrup which I use on my Sunday runs or on race days. They make my stomach very sore and uncomfy. What other alternatives can I use that will provide a similar amount of energy levels but be kind to my body.

Please help,

Hi Karen

Are you diluting them sufficiently? I seem to recall that GU gels contain about 22 grams of sugar per sachet, and that means that you need at least 250 ml of water with them, or you're taking in too much sugar (as a concentration, I mean).

So if you dilute them more, it may help your stomach, because what you're describing is a classic sign of too high a sugar concentration.

So I'd try that first. Otherwise, powerade or energade is about 7g per 100ml, which is much lower than GU (unless you dilute it with 300ml of water) and that might do the trick.

Good luck
